Every void. No test.

Urinfo is a small, portable device that can be used on any toilet. It is being developed to replace the archaic bladder diary: more convenient and less embarrassing for the patient, and for the clinician, data that is easy to interpret and can be accessed remotely. It is designed for how women and men each void, rather than around a single posture.

For clinicians and researchers

The clinical problem

Both methods ask the patient to do the measuring

Lower urinary tract symptoms are usually assessed in a clinic, in a single visit, on a bladder filled to order, in a room the patient has never used before. It is a snapshot of one day.

The alternative, a paper bladder diary kept over several days, depends on a patient recording every void accurately, including overnight, and the recording is where it fails.

The compliance problem does not go away by moving the test home. It goes away by removing the test.

What we are building

Fitted on arrival. Then left alone.

The patient fits Urinfo to the toilet when they arrive, and it stays there, reading every void until they collect it and move on. It travels between places in a hygienic case, so the record follows the patient rather than stopping at the front door. There is nothing to measure and nothing to write down. What reaches the clinician is a complete record rather than a remembered one, accessible remotely and designed to be read quickly.

The battery is designed to last the whole bladder diary period, so there is nothing to plug in partway through and no gap in the record.

Urinfo is being developed by Astro Health Ltd, a United Kingdom company, with academic partners.

Why passive changes the data

Not a better sample. A different kind of data.

Home monitoring already showed that more measurements beat one measurement. But a device the patient sets up for each void still collects the voids the patient chooses to collect, during the period they have been asked to collect them. The compliance problem moves; it does not disappear.

A device that is already fitted collects a different kind of data. Once it is in place, every void is captured: the ones at three in the morning, the ones on the day the patient felt fine and would not have bothered, and the ones after the diagnostic episode is over. That makes monitoring through treatment possible, not just assessment before it.

  • No per-void decision. The device is fitted once on arrival, not set up for each use, so the patient is not choosing which voids count.
  • Nocturia captured properly. The voids least likely to be recorded are the ones that matter most for several of these conditions.
  • Longitudinal, not episodic. Response to medication or surgery becomes observable rather than reported.
  • Nothing to measure, record or interpret. The burden that makes bladder diaries fail is removed rather than moved.

What it is designed to capture

A short list, honestly kept

Voided volume

The primary measurand, recorded for each void.

Frequency, day and night

Every void timed, with the day and night split kept separate.

Trends over weeks and months

Change over time rather than a single episode.

This list describes what the device is being developed to record. It is not a specification, and no accuracy or performance figures are claimed.
